Made only in exceptional years, the fruit for the Birthday Hill Pinot Noir is sourced from the best section of the estate’s MV6 block in Portsea. North facing and extremely low yielding, the soil here has the highest limestone content and is the most fertile (and well protected) of the block, allowing for wonderful fruit quality and concentration. This wine was made with 30% whole bunch fermentation and 30% new oak.
Remarkably dark and concentrated in colour, the nose of the 2024 Birthday Hill is complex with classic Portsea Estate graphite, truffle and mushroom and lifted herbal notes from whole bunch fermentation. The palate is supple and silky with dark cherry and plums, cured meat and smoky oak, as well as fine tannins from whole bunch fermentation. The length is fantastic with wonderful tension and a long, elegant finish. The 2025 Birthday Hill will age for 10-15 years.
